Worries are mounting over the increasing proliferation of political parties in Nigeria as the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC) recently issued certificates to 21 parties it registered in December last year.
The new parties have brought the number of political parties in the country to a staggering 67, thereby raising concern on the country’s ability to cope with the logistical demands of such unwieldy number of parties contesting for political offices.

Fulani herdsmen need help, not all are criminals – Gov Bagudu

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagugu of Kebbi State, on Tuesday, has said that Fulani herdsmen needed help to change  their old lifestyle and pastoral practices which they have been practicing  for centuries.
Governor Bagudu, who lamented that all herdsmen recently are being labeled as criminals due to killings in some parts of the country, especially  Benue, Zamfara and Nasarawa states, however, said that “Not all Fulani’s herdsmen are criminals. These  killings have nothing to do with religion. It is just about lifestyle that need to be change”.
Governor Bagudu, who stated this during the disbursement of N93 million to various communities under the Kebbi State Community and Social Development Project(KB-CSDP)also  said, Iin the last two weeks, news headlines from national dailies portrayed herdsmen as criminals.
“These pastorals are those people that are moving their animals around. The societal pressure and environmental changes have made this pastoral practice difficult. I was in the Senate in 2014 and we set up adhoc committee and the mission of the committee was to visit six states which included Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara states, where farmers and Fulani’s clashes took place.
“Part of our findings was that in all these states, citizens of various groups who are acting like herdsmen perpetrate the crimes. Some of these herdsmen, I am not saying we don’t have criminals among them, but we have many of them who are just doing their pastorals and the criminal activities are affecting their lives.
” Whenever I visited Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, the issue people raise is about security. People cannot go to their homes and farms. The case is different now due to the support we received from the Mr. President. We have achieved a lot of good results. Now our neighbouring state, Zamfara, is being affected now.

Benue killings: Lalong visits Ortom, apologises again

Governor Solomon Lalong of Plateau State, on Tuesday, led a delegation of Plateau elders to Benue State on a sympathy visit.
The visit, it was gathered, was to both commiserate with the government and people of the state for the herdsmen invasion of the state in which over 70 people were killed, and also to formally tender his (Governor Lalong’s) apology to  his Benue State counterpart for saying he warned him (Governor Ortom) against the Anti-Open Grazing law.
Governor Lalong, who was represented by the Plateau State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Barr. Fetus Fwamtel, while noting that Benue and Plateau states had lost over 7,000 people each to the so-called ‘unknown gunmen,’ however, described the recent killing of Benue people as, “one murder too many and an onslaught against us as a people.”
The Plateau governor also noted that the separation of Benue and Plateau state was not to divide the people of both states, but rather to unite them. He stated that, “we cannot afford to break our tide, we cannot afford to fail our past leaders who toiled to ensure our unity.”
Responding, Governor Ortom said that Governor Lalong and himself had come a long way, explained that even before he (Governor Lalong) apologised, he had forgiven him but, however, expressed joy that the Plateau State governor had openly apologised.
In the words of the Benue governor, “Lalong and I have been close thinking together on how we can over come our common challenges. We need to get closer now more than ever before. He apologized and even before he did, I made a pronouncement that I have forgiven him. I am happy he apologized so we can quickly put this behind us.”

Many killed as train derails in US

An Amtrak passenger train derailed on Monday during its inaugural run along a faster route through Washington State, sending part of the train crashing down onto a major highway and killing an unknown number of passengers, authorities said.
The derailment caused “multiple fatalities,” Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the local sheriff’s office, told reporters at the scene, though he did not offer a specific number. The train struck several cars on the highway, he added, causing injuries but no additional deaths.
Seventy-seven people were transported to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties, the Tacoma-based CHI Franciscan Health healthcare network said in a statement. Four of them were considered “level red” patients with the most severe injuries.
Approximately 78 passengers and five crew members were aboard the train, Amtrak said in a statement.
People escaped the derailed train by kicking out windows, passenger Chris Karnes told local news outlet KIRO 7.
“All of a sudden, we felt this rocking and creaking noise, and it felt like we were heading down a hill,” Karnes said. “The next thing we know, we’re being slammed into the front of our seats, windows are breaking, we stop, and there’s water gushing out of the train. People were screaming.”
The derailment occurred on the first day Amtrak trains began using a new inland route between the cities of Tacoma and Olympia, part of a project to reduce travel time, according to an October news release from the state’s transportation department.
The rerouting takes trains along Interstate 5, eliminating a major choke point for passenger trains in Tacoma and allowing trains to reach speeds of 79 miles per hour (127 km per hour), the department has said.
Monday’s train, which had been scheduled to depart Seattle at 6 a.m. (1400 GMT) for Portland, Oregon, was the first to run along the new route, which uses tracks owned by a local commuter line.
It was not immediately clear whether the derailment, which came during a busy travel time one week before the Christmas holiday, was connected to the rerouting.
The train derailed around 7:30 a.m. (1530 GMT) in DuPont. A photograph posted by a Washington State Police spokeswoman showed an upside-down train car partially crushed on the highway, with a second car dangling off the overpass.

It is unfortunate that at a time like this that armed robbery, kidnapping and sundry violent crimes have become rife in the country, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police is enmeshed in crisis over the brutalisation of many Nigerians by its operatives. In the last two weeks or so, the security outfit has been under public searchlight, thanks to citizen journalism and the internet records of its atrocities.
It all began when one man was allegedly shot by a SARS operative in Lagos, and many others went to town with their sad experiences and tales of extra-judicial killings by officials of the organisation over the years. Within a week, the hashtag, #EndSARS, had generated unprecedented following on the net, with pictures of scores of similar brutalities and dehumanisation of citizens by  SARS.
After an initial denial, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, ordered an immediate reorganisation of the anti-robbery squad, and placed it under the command of a commissioner to be based in Abuja. The envisaged reorganisation is expected to ensure that the outfit adheres to the global best practices in policing, and is repositioned for effective service delivery, with integrity.
Now, anyone who knows the SARS and the parent Nigeria Police from which it was carved out knows that this mandate is ambitious. Policing in Nigeria has been undermined by decades of neglect, poor training and poor welfare of policemen. It has become a shadow of what any responsible security outfit should be. Persons of questionable character have, over the years, been inadvertently recruited into the force, even as citizens with better qualifications and genuine intentions failed to get appointments in the organisation.
Yet, the work of maintaining the internal security of the country is a very important one. It is, perhaps, time for us all to look in the mirror and see the results of our misplaced choices in the police. After all, the police and in this case, SARS operatives, are recruited from amongst the people and are a part of our society.
